What Every Job Seeker Should Know in 2019

If you’re looking to make a career move soon, here’s what every job seeker should know in 2019. These insights come from a recent poll conducted on behalf of CareerBuilder.

What Employers Are Looking For

Soft skills are in high demand by employers. According to the survey, 92% of employers say they’ll be looking for soft skills such as interpersonal skills, communication abilities, and critical thinking when interviewing candidates this year. Since specific technical skills are needed for some positions, 80% also said they value soft skills at least as much as hard skills when hiring candidates.

When Employers Are Looking

Over half of employers are recruiting now! Many don’t even have openings right now, but 51% of hiring managers make it a practice to continuously recruit throughout the year for potential position openings later on. (In the staffing industry, we call that keeping you in their pipeline.) This way, when they do have an opening, they can call you immediately to see if you’re still interested in making a career move.

What Employers Are Offering

Increasingly, employers are more willing to offer additional training as they recognize that many jobs require use of technology. 56% have already provided outside skills-based training to employees to prepare them for internal jobs that require higher levels of tech skills. 63% have hired someone without the required skills with plans to train them, and 59% of employers plan to train and hire workers who may not be 100% qualified but have potential. Also, 29% of employers expect on average to increase their team members’ salaries by 5% in 2019 as compared to 2018.

What Every Job Seeker Should Know in 2019

It’s still a candidate’s market, so if you have skills and a good work ethic, you’ll continue to be in demand. But to recap, this survey reveals four things:

  • Employers want to see your emotional intelligence, communication skills, and ability to think on your feet!
  • You may be recruited by an organization that doesn’t actually have an opening right now.
  • Your boss may be willing to provide outside tech training, and future employers may be willing to hire you even if you’re not a 100% match.
  • You may soon be getting a raise!
