Why Contribute to Your Boss’s Success–and How To Do It

We live in a self-centered world, where the message to take care of ourselves is practically shouted from billboards and commercials every day. In the workplace, the idea of contributing to your boss’s success seems so contradictory. Is there a good reason to help your boss succeed?

There are several, according to Sandra Johnson, a manager of HR services. When the boss succeeds, the entire team gets credited, for one thing. For another, “who conducts your performance review, helps determine compensation, and can influence promotions and other hiring opportunities?” That’s right–your boss! It reminds me of a line in the movie Jerry Maguire, “Help me help you!”

There are several steps you can take to build a stronger relationship with your boss. Johnson advocates better communicating by giving your boss respectful feedback, plus accepting your manager’s weaknesses and lending your strength to make up for his or her limitations.
